Evans Spring Newsletter 2020

Changes! Changes! And more changes!!

In these days, when our whole world, as we know it, is changing, what a peace and confident joy is ours in the GOD WHO NEVER CHANGES!!  He is still in control.

Since our last Newsletter,  everything has changed!! Our full calendar of camps and rental groups was canceled from Mid March to at least the beginning of September.  Our camp gates were closed for the first time, and remained closed for 2 months!  All 5 Spring Banquets were canceled, and we really miss seeing many of you. It was a very sad day when our Spring and summer staff were notified that there would be no camp, and we would no longer be hiring them.  The kitchen and dining hall have sat eerily vacant of happy visiting voices, and pleasant aromas. We raked acres of pine cones alone. The grass still needs cutting every few days. The grounds are beautiful, green, and lush …. but empty!!

So we prayed.  And you prayed.  And God has opened some amazing doors for very different ministry. We feel very blessed that our restrictions in BC look quite different than those in most other parts of Canada.  Our maximum number of people socially distanced has never dropped below 50.  We have the space and facilities at the camp to run outdoor, safely distanced, day programs which fit with the guidelines presented by WorkSafe BC and BC Health. Donations started arriving designated to pay spring/summer staff.  We brought on 2 college students May 1 to help with camp maintenance and planning details of our new programming. Since then, we’ve added 2 more students part time. And we are in the process of bringing on a lifeguard to help in many specific ways like taking forehead temperatures of all participants, and enforcing pool regulations.

We feel very blessed!!  And our brains are stretched & tired!!!!

What’s Happening…

There are so many details to work through in order to run a safe Day Camp following protocol, but our team has come up with many great ideas!  We will have a maximum of 24 kids per 3-day week plus around 20 staff to lead small groups, teach skills, lead chapel, cook lunch, play games, and sanitize, sanitize, sanitize. Everything will be outdoors, which makes it much easier to follow procedures.  Temperatures and health will be monitored. Please pray for this new and different way of doing camp! Our plan is to run 6-7 weeks of 3 day camps, 9:30-5 daily.

In the past few weeks, we’ve been scheduling a few specific volunteers to work in isolation around the property. WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR ALL THE WORK THEY DO!!!

Don & Rosie Lauzon moved their “home away from home” to the camp mid May, and are settling in to help in many areas throughout the spring and summer.  We are so grateful God has called them to serve with us this summer!!

This is a great time to do projects, when camp is empty.  So, as funds allow, Kevin is slowly working at changing the HBLOCK electric baseboard heat to a boiler system.  This requires a lot of crawling in the attic and crawl space!!
He is also working on Conan & Julana’s deck; a very necessary and safe place for their children to play.
One building requires a new roof.  The gym still needs paint and sound baffles, and a second furnace.
Our Staff Lodge requires washroom overhauls.
Volunteers have installed irrigation, and landscaped around Arndt’s house.
Much ongoing repairs!!

Our family is all doing well.  On March 30, Conan & Julana welcomed August Hudson. What a joy in the midst of unsettling days.  Dallas & Danae are excitedly awaiting the arrival of their first child in June.  Please pray for them as they need to find a new home in Lake Country/Kelowna.  Thank you for praying for Preston & Jessica, as she has experienced pregnancy complications. We praise God that Jessica and their baby girl expected in September, are doing well.  Jesse & Brianne have a multi-miracle covid story to tell of how they flew home early from the Philippines as airports and borders closed behind them!!  Jerad & Kalee continue to minister weekly to children & youth via technology, and enjoy building the bonds of family at home.  Maddy has lost her Graduation, her Missions Trip, and much freedom, yet she is joyfully growing in the LORD.

Thank you for your faithful prayers and support. God is so good!Kevin & Janice Evans
